Learn the Story of Austerlitz — March 21 at Town Hall
Community Speaker Series: Land, History, and How We Got Here
The Austerlitz Housing Committee is launching a new community speaker series designed to help residents better understand the place we live through story, ecology, and history. The goal is to create programming that is engaging, accessible, and not boring, while giving residents shared context for future conversations about land use, preservation, and housing.
The first program is an event on Saturday, March 21 at Town Hall, exploring Austerlitz through two connected lenses: the land itself and the human decisions that shaped it.
The program opens with Conrad Vispo, who will speak about the ecology of Austerlitz—its soils, water, forests, wildlife corridors, and natural systems—and what the land can quietly support or limit. Town Historian Tom Moreland will explore the town’s human story, tracing how settlement patterns, agriculture, roads, and local decisions accumulated over time to shape the Austerlitz we know today.
Both talks are designed to be conversational and story-driven. No prior knowledge is required—just curiosity!
Event: Land, History, and How We Got Here
Date: Saturday, March 21
Time: 11:00am - 12:30pm
Location: Austerlitz Town Hall, Spencertown
On July 4th, 2026 the Town of Austerlitz will be celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a parade and community picnic!

New Wetlands Regulatory Process (Oct.2025)
The state DEC has issued new regulations on how determinations are made as to whether a parcel or project affect regulated wetlands. The old DEC wetlands maps are no longer determinative and a request to DEC for a wetlands jurisdiction determination is now necessary for each parcel that may be part of any subdivisions, site plan, special use permit and building permit. The form(s) and regulations are posted on the DEC website (search: wetlands). The Planning Board has adopted a new form in compliance with the regulations. (See our forms page) Because applications to the Planning Board in most instances cannot be deemed complete until the DEC process is completed, early submission to the DEC is recommended before you make your Town of Austerlitz application.
